Amidst all the big movements, Barcelona’s stance on their goalkeeping situation is still in a muddle, with second-choice keeper Neto Murara looking for a fresh challenge after failing to do so last summer. As a result, third-choice keeper Inaki Pena has decided to stall any development regarding his potential loan exit.
According to Mundo Deportivo, although Neto is settled in Barcelona, he is looking for a team that might offer him first-team football and manager Xavi is well aware of the fact. The Brazilian has a contract that runs until 2023 and his agents are already working on moving abroad with options from the English Premier League and Italian Serie A being assessed.
There was also a reported interest from his native Brazil, but his representatives made it clear that the keeper’s priority is to stay in Europe.
All this has made Inaki Pena change his mind. The 22-year-old stopper was reported to be negotiating his departure in January but is now waiting for Neto’s situation to be resolved. The Brazilian moving abroad would automatically promote Pena to being the second choice and above all, his options to leave will reduce too.
As things stand, Pena already has offers from Spain and England but he will not move if Neto leaves. Back in December 2021 the young keeper was keen on moving on a simple transfer until the end of the season, but the assurance of playing second-fiddle to Marc-Andre ter Stegen has made him change his mind.
As for Neto, the goalkeeper remains confident that Barca will accept his request especially at a time when the club is, in fact, keen on offloading the talents. Philippe Coutinho’s departure has helped the club in pursuit of registering Ferran Torres, but that apparently is still not enough to comply with the financial ‘fair play’.
